Scrap the NHS Surcharge

We are in the middle of a pandemic – but that hasn’t stopped this Tory government increasing the NHS surcharge on migrant residents. We are calling on the Government to scrap the costly and immoral NHS surcharge for all migrants.

From October, the current surcharge of £400 is due to rise to £624, which will be levied alongside all visas, regardless of income.

The Green Party believes the NHS should be funded by tax – according to everyone’s ability to pay and that this charge – which is costly and immoral – amounts to exploitation of migrants.

The exemption for health care staff should apply to all migrants. Scrap the NHS surcharge!

Launch an independent inquiry into BAME Covid-19 deaths

The Green Party has backed calls for an independent inquiry into the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on black, asian and minority ethnic people.

Please sign our petition calling for an independent inquiry.

The government’s inquiry into the impact of Covid-19 on BAME people has let communities of colour down.

As Greens of Colour Chairperson Azzess Minott says:

“The government’s inquiry into the impact of Covid-19 on BAME people has let communities of colour down.

“It has been clear from the start that this review simply was not going to go far enough because it was never going to address the institutional racism that affects people of colour, particularly in the context of Covid-19.” Demand an Independent Inquiry

Decolonise our education curriculum

We’re supporting the Black Curriculum Campaign

“Black Britons here have led and contributed to many of Britain’s achievements, but you would never know that if you looked at a school textbook.”Greens of Colour chair Azzees Minnott explains why we’re supporting the Black Curriculum Campaign.Posted by Green Party of England and Wales on Tuesday, June 16, 2020

Confront racism, antisemitism and prejudice, including from an early age through a broader and decolonialised curriculum in school, focussing on histories and role models from a diverse range of ethnicities and religions. Support the Black curriculum

Take racist abuse out of politics

Green Party councillors of colour have written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask what he is doing to tackle racist abuse in politics and better protect politicians of colour.

They are urging the Prime Minister to take action on divisive language in respect of Black Lives Matters protests.

Mr Johnson and other members of the cabinet had referred to Black Lives Matters protests as “thuggery” while one Conservative councillor described an enslaver as a “hero” and the recent protests as “frenzied thug violence”. Read the Letter

End indefinite detention of migrants

We are calling for an end to indefinite detention, closing the immigration detention centres and ending the culture of abuse and violence that has prevailed in them.

Britain is the only country in Europe to use indefinite detention.

This practice has no place in our immigration policy. It’s expensive, it’s ineffective and it has a barbaric impact on people trapped in this system. Sign the petition to end Indefinite Detention
